🩰 Beneath the petticoats, the art of mystery. Within the folds, a well-kept secret. (The underpinning that makes all the difference!)
A mischievous gust of wind? The Marquise would never allow an impertinent glance to linger on her ankles…
This white cotton petticoat, decorated with grosgrain ribbons at the waist and hem, preserves modesty while protecting the noble fabric of the gown from the wear of worldly life.
A pli religieuse at the hem adds a touch of playfulness. The pleats, sewn entirely in 18th-century fashion, meet in a flat pleat at the front to keep the line slender, and in a box pleat at the back to give volume.
Closed with ties at the front and back, it leaves the hips free: the Marquise must be able to slip her hand into her pockets worn beneath… so that a billet-doux may find refuge there before prying eyes take notice.
