✨ A little history, a great deal of allure
Ah! The robe à la française, with its noble Watteau pleats — true emblem of 18th-century boudoirs and balls! Worn between 1720 and 1770, it reigned supreme until the rise of the robe à la polonaise and later Marie-Antoinette’s chemise à la reine.
This luxurious version is inspired by the most sumptuous court portraits, where every curl, every trim, every sparkle is a declaration. It carries high the refinement of Versailles. It consists of:
- A brocade skirt
- A silk stomacher edged with lace, adorned with four large double bows, heightened with rhinestone “diamond” buttons
- An overdress with a long train, entirely bordered with silk garlands and lace, dotted with imitation diamond rhinestones. Wide lace engageantes complete the marquise’s silhouette.

🧵 Technical details
- The skirt closes with bias ties
- The stomacher may be fastened with invisible press studs, or in more historical fashion with pins — in which case, wearing a boned bodice (corset) is highly recommended!
- The overdress features back lacing, concealed beneath the Watteau pleats
(These pleats are known as “Watteau pleats,” in homage to the artist who immortalised them in so many gallant paintings.)
